VR Headset High Resolution 4K Pimax Crystal Super Update Shows Impressive Progress with Slimmer Exterior

Earlier this year, alongside Crystal Light, Pimax unveiled the Crystal Super variant, which diverges significantly with features such as eye-tracking, automatic interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment, and the option to switch between two display modules and two lenses for different pixel densities and field-of-views (FOV).

Initially expected to match the scale of its counterparts in the Crystal lineup, Pimax has since announced a nearly 30 percent reduction in its external dimensions, revealing a new, more compact design. Despite this progress, the headset appears to still be in its early developmental stages. The company has showcased non-functional prototypes and renders of the form-factor in promotional videos. However, the through-the-lens footage of the new headset features an older prototype that utilizes previous Pimax technology.

The display modules of the Crystal Super feature a remarkable 3,840 × 3,840 resolution per eye, offering users the choice between a QLED & mini-LED (120Hz) display or a micro-OLED (90Hz) display. Both versions of the Crystal Super also provide options for two different lenses: one offering 50 pixels per degree (PPD) and a slightly wider field of view (FOV) of 130° horizontally, and another lens with 57 PPD and a FOV that is yet to be announced. Pimax states that the lenses on the Crystal Super are "30 percent larger" compared to those on the Crystal and Crystal Light models.

The image below depicts the 50 PPD lens configuration.

The QLED version will be ready first, the company says, noting that it’s the model with the most pre-orders. Additionally, the company says the lens providing 57 PPD and a lower FOV is still in development.

According to the company, the QLED version of the Crystal Super will be the first to be available, highlighting its popularity with the most pre-orders. The lens offering 57 pixels per degree (PPD) and a narrower FOV is still under development.

Currently, all variants of the Crystal Super are open for pre-order reservations, and shipments are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Still a bit pricey, but The base model featuring a QLED display is priced at $1,800 and includes inside-out tracking.

Alternatively, the micro-OLED model is priced at $2,000. For those interested in both display modules, a bundle is offered at $2,400. Controllers and an optional SteamVR tracking faceplate are available separately.
